    Flare is for people who want more control and agency. People of any identity can wear our jewelry and have a Flare membership. In the future, we look forward to providing more styles and solutions to meet different needs. Right now, Flare is only available to be purchased by Student Members. Student Membership is currently open to high school and college students with iOS devices. Don’t qualify?  for our waitlist for our national launch in the Fall. 

     

  • Using Flare

  • Why do you require access to my location?

    Flare requires access to your location so that we can share it with the people you designated in the app when you send out a message to your friends.

  • What devices can I connect Flare to?

    Right now the Flare mobile app is only available on the iTunes App Store for iPhone (5s or newer). Android is coming in the Fall!

  • Why do you require access to my contacts?

    Flare requires access to your contacts so that we can send a message to the 5 friends that you choose in the app.

  • Why do you require the ability to send notifications?

    Flare requires the ability to send you push notifications so that you can get a notification with a coded phrase that lets you know that a message has been sent out to your friends from the app.

  • How do I cancel a message that has been sent out from my bracelet?

    When you have an active message, you can cancel it by entering the personal pin that you choose during setup. An active message can only be canceled with this pin. Do not share your pin with anyone else.

  • Who does the group text go to when I activate a message?

    In the Flare app, you can designate up to 5 contacts to be notified if you press and hold the button on your bracelet for 3 seconds. They will receive a group text message that includes your location and asks them to reach out to you. Because it is a group text message, your contacts can text each other to coordinate. You can change the 5 contacts at any time in the app.
  • Will the call work if my phone is on silent?

    You can program your phone to ring anytime you get a phone call from Flare, even if your phone is on silent or do not disturb. On your iPhone, open the contact that you created for the Flare number. Click on Ringtone and toggle the Emergency Bypass switch to the on position.
  • What number does Flare call from?

    Your calls and messages from Flare will come from the same set of numbers. Program the numbers in your phone by saving them under one contact and giving it a code name. This will help the phone call look and feel like a real person is calling you.
  • If I activate the phone call feature, will anyone be contacted?

    No. No one will be contacted if you active the phone call feature.
  • How do I activate Flare and what happens if I accidentally activate it?

    Countless hours of design work have gone into making sure our devices and buttons are not easy to accidentally activate. Accidental button presses rare. The discreet button is placed where it would not normally be touched by your body or other objects and it requires some force to activate.

    If you do accidentally hit the button once, you will get the usual automated phone call. No sweat – just answer the call or hang up.

    If you accidentally press and hold the button, you can easily cancel the message that is sent to your contacts in the app. We will notify your contacts that you've canceled and you can also message them directly from the app.

  • Will Flare work internationally?

    Yes! While Flare is currently only available for sale in the United States, it will work while you are traveling abroad, as long as your phone has cellular service. Please be aware that the Flare app and features will likely have a small delay while being used outside the United States. In addition, your phone must be logged in to the Flare app and have Bluetooth enabled. If you travel and change your SIM, you'll need to update your phone number in your account.

  • Do I need my phone with me for Flare to work?

    We use Bluetooth technology to communicate from your bracelet to the Flare app on your iPhone. Your bracelet needs to be within 30 feet (unobstructed) of your phone for the signal from your bracelet to reach your phone. The Bluetooth and cellular service on your phone need to be turned on and you need to be signed in to the Flare app.
  • Where do I download the Flare app?

    Visit the iTunes App Store and download the Get Flare app on your iPhone. An Android mobile app is coming in the Fall!

  • Do I need a phone to use Flare?

    Your bracelet works with your mobile phone. You will need to download the Flare mobile app to use your bracelet. And your phone needs to be nearby, with cellular service enabled, and Bluetooth enabled.
  • When should I use Flare?

    Whether you’re questioning intentions, someone is getting too aggressive, or your “no” isn’t being listened to, Flare is about trusting your gut when you feel unsafe. It’s about taking action earlier in the moment, and not waiting for the situation to become more dangerous. It’s up to each individual member to choose when and why to use Flare. We recommend wearing Flare as often as possible, because you never know when something may come up.


    Different situations call for different solutions and Flare will not help in every single situation. Flare is designed for situations that occur most frequently in our lives.  We recommend that you take other precautions in addition to wearing Flare. Sometimes that means saying something to the other person who is making you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, calling the police, or using other self-defense methods will feel more appropriate for you in the moment. 


    Flare is a safety device, not a device for avoiding things that feel safe but we just don’t want to do - like tough conversations or ghosting someone. It is about showing up for ourselves and feeling confident getting outside our comfort zone. At Flare we value empathy, inclusion, embracing who you are (flaws and all), and respecting others. We expect our members to adhere to these community values as well.

  • The Bracelet

  • What materials are Flare bracelets made of?

    Flare bracelets are made our of brass and plated in either sterling silver, 12K gold, 24K gold, or rose gold. They are nickel free, FCC certified, and RoHS and REACH compliant.

  • Can I shower with Flare on? Is it waterproof?

    Flare is water-resistant. Some splashing and rain is okay, but do not wear your bracelet in the shower or swimming. Please note, bracelets damaged due to exposure to water will be replaced at the cost of the user.

  • How do I know if Flare will fit on my wrist?

    Flare bracelets are one-size fits most. They are designed to be bent to your wrist shape the first time you put it on. You can see more specifications for our bracelets here.
  • How long does the battery last?

    Flare bracelets run for approximately a year and a half with regular usage. However, with an active membership, we replace your bracelet every year so that you never have to worry about it running out of juice. After all, we tend to enjoy being on the safe side.   • Do I need to charge my Flare bracelet?

    No, you do not need to charge your Flare bracelet. You can see the specifications for our bracelets here.

  • What comes with my Flare membership?

    You'll get a Flare bracelet, an iOS app with access to our growing pool of customizable features, to on-demand phone lines to call you, and to a readily available messaging service to reach out to your friends.

  • My bracelet is broken, lost, or damaged.

  • Can I give Flare as a gift?

    Currently, Flare is only available directly to students and cannot be gifted. Flare will be available for gifting this Fall.

  • How do I cancel my Flare membership?

    If you're not happy with your Flare membership, please reach out to us at hello@getflare.com.

  • Can I return Flare if I'm not satisfied?

    Yes.  Members receive a 30-day no-risk trial. Return your bracelet and cancel your membership, no questions asked, during that time period. If you have additional questions regarding a return, please email us at hello@getflare.com.

  • What if Flare becomes recognizable by potential attackers?

    We have designed Flare in many different styles, colors, and patterns so that it does not have one distinct look. For the past two years, we have put in countless design hours to make sure that our devices actually look like bracelets and that our technology is subtle and hidden in plain sight. Stay tuned for more styles. 

  • What is my data used for?

    We use your data to improve our products and develop better solutions for improving safety for all of our members.

  • Who does Flare share my information with?

    Flare respects our users' privacy and does not share data for purposes of marketing and promotion. Flare will never sell or share personally identifiable information (PII). We only ever share your location with your contacts when you have hit the button and given us permission to do so. For more information, please refer to our privacy policy.
